IMPLEMENTATION OF STRATEGIES FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE RUMIPAMBA WATERSHED, LOCATED IN NORTHWEST QUITO, THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL MONITORING, AND SITE MANAGEMENT INFRASTRUCTURE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL FUND FOR THE PROTECTION OF WATERSHEDS AND WATER (FONAG).
This project, jointly developed by Universidad UTE, FONAG, Wismar University (Germany), Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Ibarra, promotes water management strategies in the Rumipamba ravine through three main action lines: (1) environmental education with the construction of an educational pavilion; (2) hydrometeorological monitoring through a climate station; and (3) risk management by developing scenarios for potential extreme events. The initiative integrates teaching, research, and community service, links schools and local communities, and generates data to support public decision-making.
Environmental Science Learning Building
The Environmental Awareness and Environmental Sciences Research Station in the Rumipamba Ravine is conceived with a bioclimatic and accessible design, based on a lightweight and modular structure, and the use of sustainable materials compatible with the surrounding ecosystem.
Global Description and Objectives
The project, led by Universidad UTE in collaboration with FONAG and national and international universities, aims to protect and conserve the water resources of the Rumipamba Ravine, a key area for Quito’s water supply. The initiative combines environmental education, scientific monitoring, and risk management, articulating teaching, applied research, and community engagement. Its main actions include the construction of an environmental education pavilion, the installation of a hydrometeorological station to generate accurate data, and the development of scenarios for potential extreme events. Through these efforts, the project seeks to strengthen water culture, provide data for decision-making, and safeguard both the quality and quantity of this vital resource.
General Objective
Contribute to the protection of the water resources of the Rumipamba Ravine to safeguard its flow and improve its quality.
Specific Objectives
- Facilitate the implementation of environmental education strategies in schools within the area of influence of the Rumipamba Ravine.
- Monitor the behavior of basic hydrometeorological variables within the Rumipamba watershed.
- Define the areas of potential impact in the event of a rupture of the Rumiloma dam.
